Carotid Endarterectomy

Articles and resources for Carotid Endarterectomy in Vascular Surgery.

Carotid endarterectomy is a surgical procedure aimed at reducing the risk of stroke by correcting stenosis, or narrowing, of the carotid arteries. These arteries, located on either side of the neck, supply blood to the brain. Common reasons for this surgery include the presence of significant plaque buildup, which can impede blood flow and potentially lead to a stroke. Patients may be evaluated for this procedure if imaging studies reveal severe narrowing of the carotid arteries and if they have experienced transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) or strokes.

The procedure typically involves making an incision in the neck to access the affected carotid artery. The surgeon then removes the plaque that is causing the blockage, restoring normal blood flow. Surgery may last from one to two hours, and patients are usually placed under general anesthesia. After the operation, monitoring in a recovery area is standard, and patients may spend a few days in the hospital for observation and recovery.

The benefits of carotid endarterectomy can include a significant reduction in the risk of stroke and improved blood flow to the brain. However, like any surgical procedure, it carries risks, such as infection, bleeding, or complications related to anesthesia. There is also a possibility of new neurological symptoms or even stroke during or after the surgery, although these risks are generally low when the procedure is performed in appropriate candidates.
