Our Summary
This study looked at the long-term effects of a specific type of breast cancer surgery (nipple-sparing mastectomy with implant reconstruction) on women’s quality of life. They specifically wanted to see how the numbness or reduced sensation in the breast and nipple affected women’s physical, mental, and sexual well-being.
They sent a survey to women who had this surgery between 2008 and 2020, asking about their breast and nipple sensation after the operation. Of the 349 women who participated, 131 responded. Most of these women had surgery on both breasts, and the average time from their surgery to when they completed the survey was six years.
The results showed that most women experienced numbness or less sensation than before the surgery in their reconstructed breasts and nipples. The women who reported total numbness in their reconstructed breasts also reported a lower physical well-being. Similarly, those who reported total numbness in their nipples reported lower physical, mental, and sexual well-being.
In simple terms, this study found that women who have less sensation in their breasts and nipples after this type of breast reconstruction surgery also have a lower quality of life in terms of their physical health, mental health, and sexual well-being.

Doctor’s Tip
A doctor might recommend working with a physical therapist or counselor to help improve physical and mental well-being after nipple reconstruction surgery. Additionally, they may suggest exploring different techniques or therapies, such as nipple stimulation or sensory retraining exercises, to potentially improve sensation in the reconstructed nipple. It’s important for patients to communicate any concerns or issues with their healthcare provider so that they can provide appropriate support and guidance throughout the healing process.
Suitable For
Therefore, patients who are considering nipple reconstruction following a mastectomy may be recommended this procedure if they are concerned about the potential impact of reduced sensation on their overall quality of life. Additionally, patients who have undergone nipple-sparing mastectomy with implant reconstruction may also be advised to undergo nipple reconstruction if they experience total numbness in their reconstructed breasts or nipples, as this may have a negative impact on their physical, mental, and sexual well-being. Ultimately, the decision to undergo nipple reconstruction should be made in consultation with a healthcare provider, taking into consideration the individual’s goals and concerns.
Timeline
Before nipple reconstruction:
- Patient undergoes mastectomy surgery to remove breast tissue.
- Patient may experience loss of sensation in the breast and nipple due to nerve damage during surgery.
- Patient may feel self-conscious or have body image concerns due to the absence of nipples.
After nipple reconstruction:
- Patient undergoes nipple reconstruction surgery to create a new nipple using tissue from another part of the body or a prosthetic nipple.
- Patient may experience temporary discomfort, swelling, or bruising after the procedure.
- Patient may regain sensation in the nipple over time as nerves heal.
- Patient may feel more confident and satisfied with their appearance after nipple reconstruction.
