Hypospadias Repair
Articles and resources for Hypospadias Repair in Pediatric Surgery.
Hypospadias repair is a surgical procedure aimed at correcting a congenital condition where the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder, does not open at the tip of the penis. Instead, the opening may be located on the underside of the penis, which can affect urinary function and sexual development. This condition is relatively common, occurring in about 1 in 200 male births, and is often identified shortly after birth. Repair is typically recommended to improve function, appearance, and overall quality of life.
The surgical procedure usually takes place when the child is between 6 months and 18 months old, although it can vary based on individual circumstances. During the surgery, a pediatric surgeon repositions the urethra to the tip of the penis and may also reshape the penis if necessary. The operation generally lasts a few hours and is performed under general anesthesia. After the procedure, a catheter may be placed to help with urination during the healing process, and parents can expect some follow-up appointments to monitor recovery.
While hypospadias repair can significantly improve urinary function and the cosmetic appearance of the penis, there are potential risks involved, as with any surgery. These risks may include infection, bleeding, and complications related to anesthesia. Additionally, there may be concerns about the final appearance and function of the urethra, which can vary from patient to patient. Understanding these factors can help families make informed decisions about the surgical options available.
