Joint Fusion
Articles and resources for Joint Fusion in Orthopedic Surgery.
Joint fusion, also known as arthrodesis, is a surgical procedure designed to permanently connect two or more bones in a joint. This technique is often considered for patients experiencing severe arthritis, joint instability, or chronic pain that has not responded to conservative treatments. By fusing the bones, the procedure aims to alleviate pain and improve function, particularly in weight-bearing joints like the ankle, knee, or spine.
The fusion process typically involves removing damaged cartilage and preparing the bone surfaces for fusion. Surgeons may use bone grafts, either from the patient or a donor, to promote healing and encourage the bones to grow together. The surgery can be performed through traditional open methods or minimally invasive techniques, depending on the specific joint and individual circumstances. Recovery usually involves a period of immobilization followed by rehabilitation to regain strength and mobility.
While joint fusion can lead to significant pain relief and improved function, it also carries potential risks. These may include infection, blood clots, or complications related to anesthesia. Additionally, since the procedure permanently restricts movement in the fused joint, adjacent joints may experience increased stress, potentially leading to issues over time. Understanding both the benefits and risks is essential for patients considering this option.
