Arthroscopy
Articles and resources for Arthroscopy in Orthopedic Surgery.
Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used primarily in orthopedic surgery to diagnose and treat joint issues. Commonly performed on the knee, shoulder, and ankle, it is often considered when patients experience persistent pain, swelling, or limited mobility despite conservative treatments. Conditions such as torn ligaments, cartilage damage, or joint inflammation may prompt the use of arthroscopy, allowing surgeons to visualize the internal structures of a joint more clearly than with traditional open surgery.
During an arthroscopy, small incisions are made near the affected joint, through which a thin tube with a camera, called an arthroscope, is inserted. This allows the surgeon to see the joint on a monitor and assess any damage. Additional instruments can be introduced through other small incisions to perform repairs or remove damaged tissue. Patients typically receive anesthesia and may experience shorter recovery times compared to open surgery, with many able to return home the same day.
While arthroscopy generally offers benefits such as reduced scarring and quicker rehabilitation, it is not without risks. Potential complications can include infection, blood clots, or damage to surrounding structures. Additionally, while many patients experience significant relief from symptoms, some may not achieve the desired results, necessitating further treatment or surgery. Understanding these aspects can help individuals make informed decisions about their joint health.
