Strabismus Surgery

Articles and resources for Strabismus Surgery in Ophthalmic Surgery.

Strabismus surgery is a procedure aimed at correcting misalignment of the eyes, a condition known as strabismus. This condition can manifest as one eye turning in, out, up, or down, leading to issues such as double vision or difficulties with depth perception. Common reasons for considering this surgery include cosmetic concerns, functional challenges, or to improve vision in children who may have amblyopia, often referred to as “lazy eye.” The surgery is typically recommended when non-surgical treatments, such as glasses or vision therapy, have not been effective.

During strabismus surgery, the ophthalmic surgeon adjusts the eye muscles responsible for eye movement. The procedure usually takes place under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation, depending on the patient’s age and specific needs. The surgeon makes small incisions in the conjunctiva, the thin membrane covering the eye, to access the muscles. After adjusting the muscles, the incisions are closed, and the patient is monitored for recovery. The entire process generally lasts about one to two hours, and patients may go home the same day.

The benefits of strabismus surgery can include improved eye alignment, enhanced depth perception, and a boost in self-esteem, especially in children. However, as with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks. These can range from infection and bleeding to the possibility of overcorrection or undercorrection of the eye alignment. While many patients experience positive outcomes, it is essential to discuss individual risks and benefits with a healthcare provider.
