Scleral Buckle Surgery
Articles and resources for Scleral Buckle Surgery in Ophthalmic Surgery.
Scleral buckle surgery is a procedure used to treat retinal detachment, a condition where the retina separates from the underlying tissue in the eye. This detachment can lead to vision loss if not addressed promptly. Common reasons for considering this surgery include retinal tears, trauma, or complications from other eye conditions. The goal of the surgery is to reattach the retina and prevent further damage, thereby preserving vision.
During the procedure, a silicone band, or buckle, is placed around the eye’s sclera, the white outer layer. This band creates a slight indentation, which helps to push the retina back into its proper position against the underlying tissue. The surgery is typically performed under local anesthesia, and patients can expect to spend a few hours in the surgical center. After the procedure, a recovery period is necessary, during which patients may experience some discomfort and need to follow specific care instructions.
The benefits of scleral buckle surgery include the potential for improved vision and the prevention of further retinal detachment. Many patients experience a stabilization of their vision following the procedure. However, like all surgeries, there are risks involved, including infection, bleeding, and potential complications such as cataract formation or changes in vision. It is essential for patients to discuss these aspects with their healthcare provider to gain a better understanding of what to expect.
