Prostate Biopsy
Articles and resources for Prostate Biopsy in Oncologic Surgery.
A prostate biopsy is a medical procedure used to obtain small samples of tissue from the prostate gland, typically to check for cancer or other abnormalities. It is often recommended when a healthcare provider notices elevated prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels in blood tests, or when there are unusual findings during a digital rectal exam (DRE). The biopsy helps determine whether cancer is present, its aggressiveness, and how it may impact treatment options.
The procedure is usually performed in an outpatient setting and can involve various techniques, such as transrectal ultrasound-guided biopsy or transperineal biopsy. Before the procedure, patients may receive local anesthesia to minimize discomfort. A thin needle is then inserted into the prostate to collect tissue samples, which are sent to a laboratory for analysis. The entire process typically takes about 15 to 30 minutes, and patients are often able to return home the same day.
While a prostate biopsy can provide crucial information about prostate health, it is not without risks. Common benefits include accurate diagnosis and the ability to guide treatment decisions. However, potential risks may include bleeding, infection, or discomfort during and after the procedure. Understanding these factors can help patients have informed discussions with their healthcare providers about the necessity and implications of a prostate biopsy.
