Lumbar Fusion
Articles and resources for Lumbar Fusion in Neurosurgery.
Lumbar fusion is a surgical procedure aimed at permanently connecting two or more vertebrae in the lower back. This operation is often considered for patients experiencing chronic pain, instability, or deformities in the lumbar spine, typically due to conditions like degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, or spinal stenosis. The goal of the fusion is to reduce pain and improve stability by eliminating movement between the affected vertebrae.
During the procedure, a neurosurgeon will make an incision in the lower back to access the spine. The damaged disc or bone may be removed, and bone graft material is placed between the vertebrae to promote fusion. This graft can come from the patient’s own body or from a donor. The surgery may involve the use of metal hardware, such as screws and rods, to support the spine during the healing process. Recovery typically includes a hospital stay and a rehabilitation program to help regain strength and mobility.
The potential benefits of lumbar fusion include reduced pain, improved function, and enhanced quality of life for many patients. However, like any surgery, it carries risks, such as infection, blood loss, or complications related to anesthesia. Additionally, not all patients experience the same level of relief, and some may have ongoing discomfort or complications related to the fusion itself. Understanding both the benefits and risks is important for anyone considering this procedure.
