Dental Implant Surgery
Articles and resources for Dental Implant Surgery in Maxillofacial and Dental Surgery.
Dental implant surgery is a procedure designed to replace missing teeth. It is commonly considered for individuals who have lost teeth due to injury, decay, or periodontal disease. Implants serve as a stable foundation for artificial teeth, helping restore function and aesthetics. This surgery can significantly improve a person’s ability to chew and speak, as well as enhance their smile and overall confidence.
The surgery typically involves several steps. Initially, a dental professional will assess the patient’s oral health and jawbone structure to determine suitability for implants. During the procedure, a titanium post is surgically placed into the jawbone, acting as a root for the new tooth. After a healing period, during which the implant integrates with the bone, an abutment and crown are attached, completing the restoration. Patients can expect some discomfort and swelling post-surgery, which usually subsides within a few days.
The benefits of dental implant surgery include improved oral function, enhanced appearance, and increased comfort compared to removable dentures. Implants can also help preserve jawbone health by preventing bone loss that often occurs after tooth loss. However, there are risks involved, such as infection, nerve damage, or implant failure, which may require further treatment. Understanding these factors can help individuals make informed decisions about their dental health.
