Laparoscopic Hernia Repair

Articles and resources for Laparoscopic Hernia Repair in General Surgery.

Laparoscopic hernia repair is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to correct hernias, which occur when an internal organ or tissue pushes through a weak spot in the abdominal wall. This type of surgery is often considered when a hernia causes pain, discomfort, or complications such as incarceration or strangulation, where the blood supply to the trapped tissue is compromised. Common types of hernias treated include inguinal (groin) and umbilical hernias, among others. Patients may seek this procedure to alleviate symptoms and prevent further complications.

During laparoscopic hernia repair, the surgeon makes several small incisions in the abdomen and uses a camera, called a laparoscope, to guide the repair. Specialized instruments are inserted through these incisions to push the hernia back into place and reinforce the abdominal wall, often with a mesh material. The procedure typically lasts one to two hours, and patients may be able to return home the same day. Recovery often involves a shorter hospital stay and quicker return to normal activities compared to traditional open surgery.

The benefits of laparoscopic hernia repair include reduced pain, minimal scarring, and a faster recovery time. Many patients experience less postoperative discomfort and can resume daily activities sooner. However, there are potential risks associated with any surgical procedure, including infection, bleeding, or complications related to anesthesia. In some cases, hernias may recur even after surgical repair. Understanding these factors can help individuals make informed decisions about their treatment options.
