Colectomy
Articles and resources for Colectomy in General Surgery.
Colectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of all or part of the colon, which is a key part of the digestive system. This operation is often considered for various reasons, including the treatment of conditions such as colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis, or severe polyps. In some cases, colectomy may also be performed to relieve symptoms that have not responded to other treatments, aiming to improve the patient’s quality of life.
The procedure can be performed using traditional open surgery or minimally invasive techniques, such as laparoscopy. During a colectomy, the surgeon makes incisions in the abdomen to access the colon, removes the affected section, and then reconnects the remaining parts if necessary. Patients can expect to stay in the hospital for a few days post-surgery, with recovery times varying based on the extent of the surgery and individual health factors.
While colectomy can provide significant benefits, such as relief from symptoms and removal of diseased tissue, it also carries risks. Potential complications may include infection, bleeding, or issues related to anesthesia. Additionally, patients might experience changes in bowel habits or other digestive issues following the surgery. Understanding these aspects can help individuals make informed decisions in consultation with their healthcare providers.
