Cholecystectomy
Articles and resources for Cholecystectomy in General Surgery.
Cholecystectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the gallbladder, a small organ that stores bile produced by the liver. This surgery is commonly considered for individuals experiencing gallstones, which can cause pain, inflammation, or infection. Other reasons may include gallbladder dysfunction or certain types of gallbladder disease. Symptoms prompting this procedure often include abdominal pain, nausea, and digestive issues following meals.
The surgery can be performed using two main techniques: open surgery and laparoscopic surgery. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the more common approach, involving small incisions and the use of a camera to guide the surgeon. Patients typically receive general anesthesia, and the procedure usually lasts about one to two hours. Recovery time varies, but many individuals can return to normal activities within a week or two, depending on the surgical method and their overall health.
While cholecystectomy can provide significant relief from gallbladder-related symptoms, it does carry some risks. Common benefits include the resolution of pain and improved digestion, as well as the prevention of future complications from gallstones. However, potential risks may include bleeding, infection, or injury to nearby organs. Additionally, some patients may experience changes in digestion after the surgery, which can vary from person to person.
