Appendectomy

Articles and resources for Appendectomy in General Surgery.

An appendectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the appendix, a small, tube-like structure attached to the large intestine. This surgery is most commonly performed when a person has appendicitis, which is an inflammation of the appendix. Symptoms of appendicitis may include abdominal pain, fever, and nausea. If left untreated, an inflamed appendix can rupture, leading to serious complications, making timely surgical intervention important.

The procedure can be performed using either an open surgery technique or a minimally invasive laparoscopic approach. In open surgery, a larger incision is made in the abdomen, while laparoscopic surgery uses several small incisions and special instruments. Generally, the procedure lasts about one to two hours, and patients may need to stay in the hospital for a short period afterward. Recovery times can vary, but many people return to their normal activities within a few weeks.

While an appendectomy is often considered a safe procedure, it does carry some risks, such as infection, bleeding, or complications related to anesthesia. Benefits of the surgery typically include the resolution of appendicitis symptoms and the prevention of future appendiceal issues. However, as with any surgical procedure, individual outcomes can vary, and potential risks should be discussed with a healthcare professional.
