Our Summary

Tympanoplasty is a surgical procedure done to treat middle ear infections and restore normal ear function. However, finding the ideal method and materials for this procedure remains a challenge. This study presents a new technique that uses a modified graft made from cartilage. The procedure was performed on 40 patients at Hatay Mustafa Kemal University Hospital between 2015 and 2022.

Before and after the surgery, each patient’s hearing was tested. The results showed no complications, and 38 out of the 40 patients had intact grafts six months after the surgery, a success rate of 95%. On average, there was a significant improvement in hearing after the operation.

The study concludes that as ear surgery technology advances, this new technique, called endoscopic annular chondroperichondrial tympanoplasty, could be a major step forward in finding the best way to perform tympanoplasty.

FAQs

  1. What is tympanoplasty and why is it performed?
  2. What are the outcomes of the study on the new technique in tympanoplasty conducted at Hatay Mustafa Kemal University Hospital?
  3. What is the name of the new technique used in tympanoplasty and how does it improve the procedure?

Doctor’s Tip

A doctor might tell a patient undergoing tympanoplasty to follow all post-operative care instructions carefully, including keeping the ear dry and avoiding activities that could put pressure on the ear. It is important to attend all follow-up appointments to monitor healing and ensure the best possible outcome.

Suitable For

Patients who are typically recommended tympanoplasty are those who have chronic middle ear infections, perforated eardrums, hearing loss, or other issues affecting the middle ear. Candidates for tympanoplasty may have experienced recurring ear infections, trauma to the ear, or have a congenital defect in the ear structure. It is important for patients to undergo a thorough evaluation by an ear, nose, and throat specialist to determine if they are suitable candidates for tympanoplasty.

Timeline

  • Before tympanoplasty:
  1. Patient experiences symptoms of middle ear infection such as ear pain, hearing loss, and drainage from the ear.
  2. Patient undergoes a hearing test to determine the extent of hearing loss.
  3. Patient consults with an ENT specialist who recommends tympanoplasty as a treatment option.
  4. Patient undergoes pre-operative tests and evaluations to ensure they are a suitable candidate for surgery.
  • After tympanoplasty:
  1. Patient undergoes tympanoplasty surgery, where a graft made from cartilage is used to repair the eardrum.
  2. Patient is monitored closely post-surgery for any complications or infections.
  3. Patient’s hearing is tested again after the surgery to assess the success of the procedure.
  4. Patient undergoes follow-up appointments with the ENT specialist to monitor healing and ensure the success of the surgery.
  5. Patient experiences improved hearing and reduced symptoms of middle ear infection.
