Our Summary
Antrochoanal polyps are non-cancerous growths, usually found on one side of the nose, which often come back after surgical removal, especially if the surgery doesn’t completely remove them. This study aimed to find out what factors can predict if these polyps will return.
The researchers looked back at the medical records of 27 patients who had surgery to remove these polyps over a five year period. Most of these patients (21 out of 27) didn’t have the polyps come back. The remaining 6 patients, however, did have the polyps return. On average, the polyps came back about 22 months after the initial surgery.
The researchers identified three factors that seemed to increase the likelihood of the polyps returning: any other diseases in the nose, a tumor size of 5 cm or larger, and the polyp not being completely removed during surgery.
The researchers concluded that to prevent the polyps from returning, it’s important to completely remove them during surgery, to manage any inflammation, and to keep a close eye on patients after their surgery. If these polyps are caught early when they do return, they can be managed more effectively.

Doctor’s Tip
Additionally, it’s important for patients to follow their doctor’s post-operative instructions closely, including any prescribed medications or nasal irrigation routines. Regular follow-up appointments with your doctor are also crucial to monitor for any signs of polyp recurrence and to address any concerns or symptoms that may arise. Overall, maintaining good nasal hygiene and seeking prompt medical attention if any issues arise can help in preventing the return of nasal polyps after surgery.
Suitable For
Patients who have antrochoanal polyps, especially those with other diseases in the nose, large polyp size, or incomplete removal during surgery, are typically recommended nasal polyp removal. It is important to closely monitor these patients post-surgery to prevent the polyps from returning.
Timeline
- Before nasal polyp removal:
- Patient experiences symptoms such as nasal congestion, runny nose, facial pain or pressure, decreased sense of smell, and postnasal drip.
- Patient may undergo a physical examination, nasal endoscopy, and imaging tests to diagnose the nasal polyps.
- Patient may try medications such as nasal corticosteroids, antihistamines, or decongestants to manage symptoms.
- If medications are ineffective, patient may be recommended for nasal polyp removal surgery.
- After nasal polyp removal:
- Patient undergoes nasal polyp removal surgery, which may involve endoscopic sinus surgery to remove the polyps and improve sinus drainage.
- Patient may experience some discomfort, swelling, and mild bleeding after surgery, which can be managed with pain medications and nasal saline rinses.
- Patient may need to follow post-operative care instructions, such as avoiding strenuous activities, using nasal sprays or rinses, and attending follow-up appointments.
- Patient may experience relief from symptoms and improved breathing after the surgery.
- In some cases, nasal polyps may return after surgery, especially if they were not completely removed or if other factors such as inflammation or tumor size were present.
- If nasal polyps do return, patient may need additional treatment such as medications or further surgery to manage the condition effectively.
